Meet the Team
It takes a whole team to perform a laparoscopic right hemicolectomy.
Here’s a quick look at who’s involved.
Surgical assistant(s) – Usually a fellow or resident. Observes, learns, drapes and preps patient and takes direction from surgeon to assist with the procedure.
Anesthetist(s) – Gives patient anesthetic to put him to sleep and feel no pain, and monitors the patients. Sometimes with a resident, fellow and/or student.
Scrub nurse – prepares drapes, supplies and instruments, and assists the surgeon.
Circulating nurse – keeps track of sterile field, prepares and tracks all instruments and equipment.
Surgeon – performs the procedure. Gives direction for surgical assistants.
