It took awhile for Dr. Bradley Strauss, interventional cardiologist and chief of the Schulich Heart Program, to realize that it’s OK to think big.

“Don’t think that because you are just an individual in a hospital somewhere in Toronto that you can’t make a huge difference,” Dr. Strauss said. “Look for new ways to do things differently, and better.”

He started to follow that advice after seeing that spirit in his mentor. Dr. Strauss dreamed big: The University of Toronto professor has invented a new way of unclogging totally blocked arteries.

We are so excited to launch our new web video series “I wish I knew then: Advice for Students”.

We’ve asked Sunnybrook’s expert staff in many health disciplines to reminisce about their school days, share some stories, and fill us in on the tips and tricks they’ve learned over the years that they wish they knew back then.

A huge thank-you to Vice-President of Education Dr. Joshua Tepper and Director of Nursing Education Leasa Knechtel who appear in our first video with some candid advice about (something that seems to be our favourite topic lately): sleep!

What do you think? Stay tuned for tips for a Sunnybrook sleep doctor for some practical tips on how to follow this advice. And, check back for more advice next week!

Who would you like to hear advice from? What about? Let us know!

First-year family practice resident Tiffany Florindo is one of the 4,000 students who learn the ropes at Sunnybrook each year.

And, she says, it’s not quite like what we see on TV.

By letting Sunnybrook’s media team follow her for the next year, Tiffany is giving a rare and candid glimpse into the busy life of a resident. She shares her fears, hopes and what it was like to be called “doctor” for the first time (You’ll have to wait for episode 2 for that!)

Watch episode 1 above. Stay tuned for more.

The blog is written from the perspective of a University of Western Ontario 3rd year medical student . An excerpt of the blog is included below:

“As a 3rd year medical student, I am a junior member (also known as a clinical clerk) of a large health care team. Throughout my rotations, situations arise where – if I was in charge – I would do things differently. Most of the time, these differences in style or approach are minor in nature and not worth talking about. Every so often, however, an incident occurs where things are done so contrary to my own values that it can be quite upsetting. In health care, we call this feeling “moral distress.”
