Man smoking marijuana

As of today (October 17, 2018) marijuana is legal in Canada for adults. Many people might be more curious about the drug, its effects, and how to reduce risk if they choose to use it. Below you can find some tips to help you and your family stay safe.

Safe storage

  • If you have cannabis in your home, you should store it safely in a child proof container and out of reach of kids and pets.  If a child gets consumes marijuana in any form it can be extremely dangerous and you should call 911 and seek help right away.
  • While edible products will not be legal in Canada until 2019, be aware that edibles may look identical to candy, especially gummy bears and brownies that will be attractive to children. Do not keep edible products near children or pets.

Mixing marijuana

  • Marijuana can interact with other medications you may be taking. Check with your doctor if you are on any prescription medications to ensure it is safe to consume together.
  • Using marijuana and alcohol at the same time can impair you more than if you have them separately.  Know what your limits are and never assume you are ok to drive with either alcohol or marijuana in your system.

Using marijuana

  • Know how marijuana affects you and know your limits.  There is such a thing as too much marijuana.  Signs that you’ve had too much can include:
    • confusion
    • anxiety
    • paranoia
    • panic
    • hallucinations
    • fast heart rate
    • severe nausea and vomiting

Seek help if you have these symptoms.

  • If you have never had marijuana before, be careful and start slow.

Respectful usage

  • Share the air. Respect the rights of others and avoid smoking in public spaces. If you live in an apartment or condominium, check with your property manager regarding the rules of smoking on the property grounds.
