A special wedding in the hospital

When Randi & Chuck decided to get married, the Sunnybrook team jumped into action to help make the day special — even though it was taking place in a hospital. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ———— ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Randi Basian and Chuck Frame met 8.5 years ago. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Even though we are so different, we got along so well and things moved along quickly,” Randi said. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The couple got engaged in Quebec City six years ago, and they started through the whole wedding planning process. But eventually time just marched on, and a wedding didn’t happen. The couple lived happily together in North York, with the idea of a wedding in the back of their minds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Six weeks ago, Chuck thought he had the flu. He went to the emergency room and was quickly transferred to Sunnybrook. It wasn’t the flu. It was leukemia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Those first few weeks were extremely frightening,” Randi said. “Chuck hurt all over, and his hip was in excruciating pain.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Doctors operated on Chuck’s hip to find leukemia cells inside. After the surgery, Chuck was intubated and admitted into the ICU. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When he woke up, Chuck recalls, he looked over at Randi and said, “It’s time to do this: let’s get married.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On Monday July 29, Randi and Chuck along with 25 friends and family members gathered in Sunnybrook’s atrium for a celebration of their love and commitment. Their friend, a judge, officiated the wedding. The following day, staff on the acute leukemia ward threw Chuck and Randi a small celebration. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “It was more beautiful than we imagined,” Randi said. “We thought it would just be a judge here in Chuck’s room, but the staff on the Complex Malignant Hematology Unit went above and beyond to help us have this very special day.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Randi and Chuck wrote their own heartfelt vows. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “I was a mess of tears during my vows,” Chuck said. “I feel like I’ve won the lottery. And our family, friends and the staff here have been so supportive.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “From this horrible event of Chuck being sick, something so beautiful and loving has happened,” Randi said. “We hope this will give him a boost in the right direction as he undergoes this next round of chemotherapy.”
