Find out how the hospital stays prepared!

  • Level 1 Trauma Centre: Sunnybrook is a level 1 trauma centre. It is also Canada’s first and largest trauma centre, caring for more than 1,200 trauma patients every year. The Ross Tilley Burn Centre cares for the majority of burn patients in Ontario.
  • The Experts: Sunnybrook experts from a range of disciplines such as trauma, disaster medicine, and pre-hospital care are working with the Games’ organizing committee to develop Toronto’s emergency preparedness plans.
  • Mobile Unit: The EMAT (Emergency Medical Assistance Team) is the province’s disaster and emergency health response unit. It is run by Sunnybrook and is on standby to respond to emergencies or disasters anywhere in Ontario within 24 hours. The EMAT has the ability to function as a Critical Care unit if the need arises.
  • Practice & Simulation: Sunnybrook conducts many internal exercises and simulations related to chemical, biological, radiological-nuclear (CBRN) events as well as mass casualty preparedness. The hospital is also a part of external groups that design and implement exercises such as heat wave/extreme weather with multiple trauma.
