Having just turned 40, my eyes are now roving the aisle’s of beauty creams with new resolve: finding the perfect moisturizer for my age. Turns out, what’s good for my face could be just as beneficial for a baby’s bottom and the person with eczema (not to mention a host of other skin conditions), according to Sunnybrook’s head of dermatology.
When I met with Dr. Neil Shear, he was excited to share some important scientific news. Without a doubt, the most frequent question he gets asked is about pinpointing the best moisturizer. Other doctors and patients all want to know, and now he can actually give them an answer based on research. Check out my video to find out what the golden ingredient is. Luckily, it’s found in many different brands and doesn’t have to break the bank. Dr. Shear provides a few examples, but there are many other products out there. It’s all about finding the one that suits your skin and pocket book.

In addition to finding the right moisturizer, Dr. Shear recommends avoiding soap with a high PH – opt for cleansing bars instead. |
Far from being just a vanity project, Dr. Shear says many skin problems could actually be managed well (meaning no need for physician intervention) with the proper moisturizer. I’ve followed his advice and found that my annual winter flareups are barely noticeable this year. It’s amazing what a few tweaks to your daily routine can do. Just make sure to be consistent about using products that work for you everywhere you go (ie. at the gym, when travelling). Yahoo! Grab a bottle and start slathering.
How does one spell these preservatives and other ingredients?
I agree. Be free – free of chemicals holding out promises which really have, or should have, no meaning to Life. Forget about what these chemicals do to you in the long term – even these marketers don’t have a clue. Think! Can’t people find happiness and meaning without these chemicals.
I hope this comment is not censored as was my comment yesterday – which did not contain anything offensive. I am a donor to Sunnybrooke but will stop donating if I see undue censorship.
My comment yesterday was that I agree with the gist of the previous commenter “How does one spell these preservatives and other ingredients?”. The gist being that adding all these chemicals cannot be healthy – for what? Media induced vanity. proven safe, you say. Like Thalidomide in the 1950’s which brought babies into the world without, or truncated, limbs. Ohh, we’re smarter now. Check out the recalls that have “passed the test” – recalls that after the fact show the “passed” product to be quite dangerous.. If it’s not medically necessary – why take it. Eat well – fresh vegetables, fruit and nuts and use naturally occurring unadulterated oils. Be well.
Thank you. I withdraw my censorship comment as my comment of yesterday and the above were both now printed.
Hi,
I apologize for the delay in posting your comments, but we’ve been experiencing some technical difficulties. Thank you so much for your feedback. The ingredients Dr. Shear talks about in the video are ceramides and filaggrin, and his comments are based on what the latest research suggests. However, it’s certainly up to every individual to decide whether using products containing these and other ingredients is appropriate for them. I agree that the basics are not to be ignored! I just finished eating my lunch, made up of grilled fish and veggies, and feel great. Wishing you all a healthy day!
Monsia makes the best in my opinion! 🙂
